Golden Joysticks for Grand Theft Auto 5 in Gaming Tournament

Grand Theft Auto takes game of the year for its version 5, which has earned it the golden joysticks accolade this year at the 31-year-old gaming awards of the same name.

“The great thing about the still-maturing nature of video games is you get to be inspired by the work of novices and veterans alike,” says BioShock creator Ken Levine “We’re all figuring out day by day exactly what the medium is capable of,” says a review in the UK’s Independent.

Grand Theft Auto 5 is excellent at breaking taboos by allowing players to explore the concept of stealing cars in a competition-style game that breaks into something free, provocative, and stress-relieving. It is this emphasis on the meta–the concept of calling attention to the ridiculous nature of playing at grand theft auto itself–and weaves it into something that is absurdly fun. It is because it’s meta that it’s allowed in the first place. Innovation like this has stolen the thunder at this year’s awards.
