In the battle for open-world gaming dominance, there can be only one king. This year, we’ve got three major contenders for the crown in Saints Row VI, Watch Dogs and Grand Theft Auto V. Which sandbox game will prove supreme? Let’s take a quick look at the strengths of each title.
Saint’s Row IV
The newest Saints Row has taken things up a notch. Once again, you’ll be controlling the leader of the Third Street Saints, only this time you’ve made it all the way to the highest office in the land: President of the United States of America.
The game has a futuristic dystopian vibe, and plenty of cool new tech for you to experiment with as you progress through the storyline. The biggest advantage that Saints Row IV has over the competition is that it’s going to be released first. You can get your copy of Saints Row IV on August 20th 2013 in the United States.
Watch Dogs is a strong contender, having been developed by some of the people associated with games like FarCry, Assasin’s Creed, and Rainbow Six. This game has you take control of vigilante Aiden Pearce, as you attempt to hack into a citywide system to do things like cause traffic accidents, steal money, gain information and more.
The game, in production since 2009, will feature a parkour style combat system as well as a stealth component and some third person shooter elements. Watch Dogs has all the makings of a massive hit, will likely have Rockstar Games looking over its shoulder. The game is set to be released on November 19th 2013.
The biggest, baddest Grand Theft Auto yet will have players controlling Franklin, Trevor and Michael, three criminals whose storylines intertwine as the player moves through the gigantic open world environment. This game is purportedly huge, with Rockstar claiming that its open world environment is larger than Red Dead Redemption, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, and Grand Theft Auto IV combined.
This should provide plenty of world for the player to experience Rockstar’s improved gameplay mechanics. With this latest GTA, Rockstar have tried to take every element of the previous games and improve upon them in some way, particularly the shooting and melee combat elements. GTA V will be released on September 17th 2013.
Which game will lay claim to the title of King of the Open World Environment? Only time will tell. Vote with your hard-earned cash for whichever game sounds the most exciting and impressive to you.
